Dear Rowers
The SLSA GB Surfboat Championships 2005 took
place at Fistral Beach - Newquay on 2nd September. Crews
where greeted with sun and cloudless skies, a 3 - 4ft swell, offshore winds
and millions of surfers! Once the safety boats had cleared the boat arena then
racing could begin in earnest with the surf building on the incoming tide.
As expected the entry was reduced from the
UKSRL League events the previous weekend, due to the entry criteria. However,
one notable newcomer was the Llantwit Major crew from S Wales with their
refurbished surfboat painted in the club colours of White, Red and Black.
In the Mens Open the start line up consisted of : Llantwit
Major, Bude, Portreath, Perranporth and Porthtowan
Overall winners of the Mens Open SLSA GB Championship
where: 1st Perranporth, 2nd Porthtowan, 3rd Bude.
Perranporth just managed to turn the tables on Porthtowan
with the luck of a wave seperating the two crews all season. Portreath
nearly had their boat up on the rocks at the north end, but for some
skilled sweeping to bring the boat around a full 180 degrees.
Bude and Llantwit Major collided at the bouy turn in the 2nd
of the three race event, breaking Llantwit's bow oar and damaging the
rowlock housing. Perranporth loaned them an oar and rudimentary repairs
where made to the gunwale to get them to the start line for the 3rd race.
Congratulations on a great effort LM and we look forward to
you attending the UKSRL events in 2006
In the Womens Open the start line up was: Portreath,
Perranporth and Porthtowan
Overall winners of the Womens Open where: 1st Porthtowan,
2nd Perranporth, 3rd Portreath.
Porthtowan Womens crew dominated the event, continuing their
winning run from the UKSRL events this season. Portreath Women nearly
caused an upset in the 2nd race, only for their bow rower to jump out to early
and find the water a tad too deep.
In the Mixed Crew the entry was : Bude and Perranporth
(however Perranporth declined to race, in order to save their rowers for the
Open Men and Open Womens event) 1st Bude
Sun and Surf..............God smiled on the Boaties
